Wall Hangings for Orphanages
Some orphanages around the world have bare walls. The wall hanging is intended to provide a colorful decoration that will stimulate the child and promote development. Please follow these guidelines (from ldsphilanthropies.org) to insure the wall hanging you donate is appropriate and safe.
Sizes:
18” x 18” up to 40” x 40”
Materials needed:
• Bright, colorfast, washable fabric
• Thread
• 1” or 1.5” Nails – 1 per fabric loop/grommet plus a couple extra
• Optional materials:
• Pellon
• Non-toxic fabric paint
• Embroidery or appliqué
• Grommets
Guidelines
• Select fabric with designs, pictures or patterns that can be recognized by children in any culture (Shapes, colors, numbers, night and day, nature scenes, etc)
• Must use 2 pieces of fabric (front and back) and finish/bind edges
• Can use Pellon in between fabric pieces or VERY thin quilt batting
• No words or letters please
• No flags, religious or military themes
• No glue and no 3-dimensional embellishments
• Machine or hand quilt around shapes or through scene to hold fabric together and make more durable
• Install grommets, double-sewn button holes or double-stitched fabric loops for hanging
• Sew a small fabric bag and baste to the back of the wall hanging; include a sufficient number of nails for hanging
Does anyone remember the website for the quilting pattern that was taught in the class? I wanted to use it to do some wall hangings and I can't remember the name of the website. Or does someone know the size of ruler the teacher used? 3 or 4 inch? Thanks so much!
