HANDMADE HATS FOR PREMATURE INFANTS

Needs the project will meet: Timpanogos Regional Hospital NICU - soft, tiny hats for premature and deceased infants

Note: We invite you to include a personal written message attached to each handmade infant hat. This message could express sympathy or any other caring words to the parents who have suffered this loss.

Materials needed:
Soft yarn in soothing, subtle colors, i.e. white, cream, and pastels
Suggested yarn and hook: Bernat Baby Yarn with an "F" crochet hook

Pattern: (Please use this pattern)

NOTES: Do not turn unless the pattern tells you to do so. This hat is worked in the round, from the band up to the top of the hat.

De dec = double crochet decrease = Yarn over (YO), insert hook into dc in previous row, YO, draw through, YO, draw through 2 loops, YO, insert hook into the next dc in previous row, YO, draw through, YO, draw through 2 loops, draw through 2 loops 2 more times until you are left with 1 loop on the hook.

Band
Row 1: Ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 4 ch, ch1 turn
Row 2-X*: sc into the back loops of each sc, ch 1, turn.
*Where X= the desired circumference of the hat, usually 11-12" for a newborn - avg head circumference is 13"-14.5"
Finishing the Band: Fold band in half. Sc across, placing the hook through the back loops of the side of the band you just finished and the free loops of the beginning of the band. This joins the two sides together to make the band.

Body of Hat
Row 1: Turn the band so the loop created by the last cs is on tiop. Ch 1, sc around the edge of the band. Try to space your stitches evenly. It does not matter how many stitches you have, so there is no need to count your stitches as you work. Join with a sl st to the first sc.

Row 2: Ch 3, dc in each sc around the band. Join with a sl st to the first dc.
Rows 3-9: Ch 3, dc in each dc around hat. Join with a sl st to the first dc.

At this point, the hat should measure 3" - 3 1/2" from scs around the top of the band, depending on the length of the band. If you have not reached this measurement, please repeat the last row until you do reach 3" - 3 1/2"

Row 10: Ch3, (dc dec, dc) around the hat. Join with a sl st to the first dc.

Rows 11-12: Ch3, dc dec, repeat around the hat. Join with a sl st to the first dc. Repeat this row until the top of the hat is almost closed. Fasten off and weave in ends.

If flower is desired, leave a 6-8" tail to sew flower to hat. Place flower and use a yarn needle to sew to the hat.

Flower (optional)

Row 1: Ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring
Row 2: <Ch4, tr 3 times into the ring, ch 4, sc into the ring) 5 times to form 5 petals.

  1. 11-12 inches looks too big for a preemie. Should we make some smaller for the preemies?

  2. Tami - please forgive me for my ignorance here - I am the "keeper" of the blog and haven't yet learned to knit or crochet. (But hope to soon!)

I have typed in the instructions that were given to us by the nurses from the hospital. If you think this is too big, would you experiment and let us know what the appropriate size would be?

    Thank you so much!!

  4. Are there any specific instructions for knitting hats or do I just need to find my own pattern?
