Diapers

Project Coordinator: Elizabeth Baltes, 18th Ward, 801-489-5606, eabaltes@hotmail.com

Cloth Diapers for Orphanages

Materials needed: Flannel (can be used flannel blankets or top sheets)
18" x 45" (diapers) or 4" x 18" flannel scraps (absorbent inserts)

These diapers will likely dry on a clothesline sometimes in a very moist climate, so they are kept thin for that reason.  The inserts are to add absorbency without adding bulk to the diaper itself.

**If you would like to donate diaper pins or rubber pants, they would be appreciated.**

Note:  Pre-wash all fabric in hot water and dry on high heat to shrink before sewing.

Instructions for Pre-folded diapers

1.     Cut two pieces of flannel or birdseye fabric that are 17 x 17 inches

2.     Fold each piece in half lengthwise.

3.     Overlap raw edges by four inches and pin in place along raw edges.  This creates a center with four layers and folded sides with two layers.  The finished diaper is 13” wide and 17” long.

4.     Zig-zag *or serge raw edges through all layers of fabric on either side of the center where you have pinned it.

5.     Zig-zag or serge the folded edges of the diaper.

6.     Zig-zag or serge raw edges at the top and bottom of the diaper.

If you are using smaller scraps of fabric this diaper may be made with four pieces of 9 ½ “ x 17” fabric.  You will just end up with raw edges on the diaper instead of folded edges.

Instructions for Diaper insert

Cut three layers of fabric 12 x 4 inches.  Zig-zag or serge around all raw edges.

*If you are using a zig-zag stitch on a regular sewing machine, your stitches must be wide and very close together.
